Free Natural Sasperilla

March 31, 2002
Filed under: sarsaparillas — anthony @ 4:39 pm
Type: Sarsaparilla Comes In: 250 ml glass bottle
Available: UK Obtained in: mail from Sam
Head: Tiny Sweetener: grape juice concentrate
Caffeine: No

just the fact that they spelled “sarsaparilla” totally wrong should have clued me in here. the second clue being how bad the root beer was. i mean, if you can’t do root beer right, can you possibly do a decent sarsaparilla? but i thought the best of them and gave it a shot. i think this may take the title of the worst beverage i have ever had. it is a little bad coming in the mouth, gets worse as it fully hits the tongue and just hits bottom when you swallow it. bitter, foul, malty awfulness fully abounds here. my gosh this is just SO bad!

DANGER avoid this at all costs!

so Sam from the UK was exceedingly kind once more and sent me a few more sodas to review. shortly i will be sending him a couple US brands to sample, a little cultural exchange if you will. upon smelling this, i though “this does not smell as bad as Sam says it tastes, how bad could it be?” then i tasted it. and holy marshmallows and toothpaste, this is awful! the first swig is the worst, it does get a little better but it still ranks up there as one of the worst things i have ever had. a sort of mix of grape bubblegum, pickles and sour patch kids. i just hope the Sarsaparilla is better than this. if not, i pity the English and suggest they get Sainsbury instead.

they say on the label that it is “Root Beer” like you’ve never tasted,” which i thought would be kinda difficult as it will be the 150th root beer i have reviewed. but then i got thinking, and pretty much all of them DO taste different, so it is possible… and if fact, yes, it is rather different than any other root beer i have had. it has a real burnt corn syrup taste to it that i kind of like but which kind of makes me feel ill. i like it alright but i am not going to order more or anything. if it was local, i may get it on occasion, but it is not at all. so, nice bottle, alright soda.

this is another brand that people keep recommending to me so i finally broke down and ordered it from beveragesdirect.com. i actually had been meaning to place that order for a year at least but then the day i did sit down to order, they were carrying this soda in addition to the 3 i had planned to order! aw yeh! cool junk. so yeh, the soda. it is good. i can’t really taste the honey which is unusual since it is pretty strong in other brews with honey. very creamy. i really almost get a cream soda taste going on, which i mean in the best way, even if i hate cream soda. it is also very sweet, clocking in with 46g of sugar. nice! i might have to order more of this one day.

Ingredients: carbonated water, 100% pure cane or beet sugar, clover honey, natural flavor, phosphoric acid and sodium benzoate (preservative)

Druthers Black Cow Vanilla Creme Rootbeer

March 21, 2002
Filed under: root beers — anthony @ 3:11 pm
Type: Root Beer Comes In: 32oz glass bottle
Available: IL Obtained in: mail from company
Head: Medium Sweetener: high fructose corn syrup

Carbs: 48g Sugar: 44g
Caffeine: No

not to be confused with Black Cow Root Beer, which i don’t think exists anymore anyhow. this one is actually much tastier. the weird thing is, i don’t really taste the vanilla so much and i don’t find it all that creamy (cremey? nah…). it has a slight liquorice taste at first but that quickly passes and i get an almost cane sugar taste, 2 ingredients that are not listed. wackier still. a good amount of carbonation. i really am partial to root beers that are available in the 32 oz size. makes me laugh and recall days of acting silly with 32s of root beer in paper bags at college. alas. so yeh, i like this but it doesn’t stand out. probably the best i’ve had that comes in a 32 though.

A-Treat Birch Beer

March 7, 2002
Filed under: birch beers — anthony @ 4:50 pm
Type: Brown Birch Beer Comes In: 12 oz can, 20 oz plastic bottle, 2L plastic bottle, keg
Available: NJ, PA, online Obtained in: online from the Amish Country Store
Head: Small Sweetener: sugar, fructose
Caffeine: No
Website: http://www.a-treat.com/

i got a keg of this for my friend mike’s birthday several years ago and it was quite tasty so i was excited to get to try it again. yup, tastes about the same. very very minty, wintergreen. yummy. i love wintergreen. the funny thing about getting a keg of root beer was we had like a month to get it back to them before we lost the deposit so it stayed in mike’s room for the whole time and was always good. never finished it i don’t think. oh well. anyhow, this is pretty good. a little over carbonated maybe but that is not so bad. this is probably the best soda i have had in a can.

A-Treat Diet Birch Beer

March 7, 2002
Filed under: diet birch beers — anthony @ 4:38 pm
Type: Diet Birch Beer Comes In: 12 oz can, 20 oz plastic bottle, 2L plastic bottle
Available: NJ, PA, online Obtained in: online from the Amish Country Store
Head: Small Sweetener: aspartame (NutraSweet)
Caffeine: No
Website: http://www.a-treat.com/

i had very high hopes for this soda since the regular canned birch beer was so good. but, sadly, the diet version kinda stinks. that awful aspertame taste is there making everything bitter and just ruining it. not really minty at all, the flavor does not seem to even resemble the regular version. it barely resembles birch beer in fact. oh well. stick with some other brand i suppose if you have to have a diet drink.
