Weis Choice Root Beer

i have probably said it 83 times by now, but there really is only so much one can say about a store brand root beer. it probably is going to taste like you expect it to. traditional root beer flavor with a strupy sweetness. even though this probably took me over a year to review so i do believe i purchased it at the same time as the two birch beers immediately above this, it retains the same flavor as i would have expected. i am actually not sure why i took so long with this. i took the photo about that time also and started to write something which i am sure would have been very witty and exciting but i never opened the can until now. nutty stuff. not literally nutty like those Nutfield’s sodas which i never did try though of course. so yeh, this is ok. nothing special.

so Boylan’s has come out with a line of “natural” sodas. leading the charge is this natural root beer with oils of sweet birch, cinnamon, sassafras, and anise along with extracts of bourbon vanilla, yucca and licorice. indeed. and let me tell you, as much as i was let down by the regular root beer from Boylan’s, i am impressed with this version! great stuff. very low carbonation which seems to help one actually taste the soda. and that, my friends, is a good thing because this is one tasty soda. sweet, perhaps a little bit too much so for some people but it is a good sweetness, not all syrupy and corn sweetener-like. you can taste the cinnamon very subtly as well as hints of the anise and licorice. great soda, one of the best!

Ingredients: carbonated water, cane sugar, pure essential oils of sweet birch, cinnamon, sassafras, and anise, extracts of bourbon vanilla, yucca, and licorice, other natural flavors and spices, caramel color (from cane sugar), citric acid

Head: Small Sweetener: cane sugar, fructose

this one seems more likely to be the same as the Shenendoah Root Beer above yet i hope they revised the flavor. i mean “sassafras” is quite fun to say so i can understand why it was left in the name. it is somewhat nice i guess as it is what root beer is supposed to be made of anyway. well, definitely sarsaparilla, but most often traditional, old fashioned root beer also. ok, well, let’s try it out.
hhhmmm, not terrible so they definitely changed the recipe here. i am unsure if i like it. i suppose i do. that is weird. imagine, ME enjoying a Journey soda, let alone 2 of them in a row like this?! wow, nutty stuff i tell you. the taste is unique and quite lacking in the anise department even if it lists it in the ingredients. it is very herbal although i can not place just what herbs are used. the cane sweetener is rather prominent but not in an offensive way really. i may buy some more of this one day. i suppose the world just may be ending as the snow just keeps coming down where i am. oh well, i am at peace, journey has redeemed themselves.

Journey Beverage Co Birch Beer

February 12, 2006
Filed under: birch beers — anthony @ 5:26 pm
Type: Brown Birch Beer Comes In: 12oz glass bottle

so i am not sure if this replaces the vile and awful Borealis Birch since i have not seen that atrocity on store shelves in a long while or if it is yet another addition to the growing and disappearing line of Journey drinks. actually besides this and the root beer, i no longer see any other Journey beverages these days. for some of them, that is a shame as they seemed to be getting some stuff right, for others, it is a reason to rejoice.
so let me pop this one open and try it! wow, that taste like anise! that is not usually a direction that birch beers take, strange. i would actually be hard pressed to find any birch flavor here at all. i don’t hate the drink but i don’t terribly love liquorice. right now, i am kind of in the mood for some so this is good but other times i am sure i would really not be into it. if you like black liquorice, this is the drink for you. i find it weird that they can’t list just what “cane sweeteners” are in here. although, are there any sweeteners beside sugar that come in the form of a cane? i don’t know of any but i am not a sweetener-ologist at all. and just where does the fructose come from? curious, very curious Journey. well, you have put out a good beverage with very nice packaging, so keep it up.

R & B Produce Homemade Root Beer

February 12, 2006
Filed under: root beers — anthony @ 5:23 pm
Type: Root Beer Comes In: 12oz glass bottle, 64 oz glass growler
Available: NJ, PA Obtained in: Amish Market in NJ
Head: Sweetener: sugar
Caffeine: No

i was pretty excited to see this in the Amish store, having never had a homemade root beer before really. the one i tried to make does not really count as it failed. i had always thought they should have some homemade root beer there but as i had only gone a few times and never saw any, i thought they must not. the fact that it is made with root beer extract is somewhat discouraging also, i hoped for some secret Amish recipe or something. oh well. so actually it is not all that good. kind of hearty smelling but then the taste is a little weak. not bad, but not really great. i am not sure the carbonation really worked that well either as there is barely any present and there is a good amount of residue on the bottom of the bottle. but it is decent and a fine first taste of homemade root beer although i doubt the ingredient list is correct in listing root beer extract before water, that would be a LOT of extract! if you can find it, grab a bottle or a jug and enjoy!

Old Towne Root Beer

February 12, 2006
Filed under: root beers — anthony @ 5:21 pm
Type: Root Beer Comes In: 20 oz plastic bottle
Available: IL Obtained in: send in mail!
Head: Medium Sweetener: high fructose corn syrup
Caffeine: No

I got an email a bit ago from a friendly fellow who offered to send me this soda. i of course accepted and a couple of days later this bottle arrived on my doorstep, wrapped better than a nuclear warhead smuggled into a third world nation. very impressive. so the website claims that this beverage is distributed in 14 states from the midwest to the northeast, but frankly i have never seen it and i drive all over that general area a good amount, looking for sodas. but it is bottled by Royal Crown (of Chicago) which i would imagine would be rather widespread. anyway… i feel like they should have gone all out with the old timey spelling and called the company “Olde Towne” if you are going to go with the “e” on the “Towne.” enough with this, off with the cap! hhhmm, curious flavor, they have ventured somewhat away from the traditional root beer taste here. very bold for a semi-generic drink. it has a sweetness that reminds me of marshmallows at first. not too bad. a little harsh in the carbonation, i know i will be burping after downing this stuff. the root beer taste is under there though, so i know what it is i am drinking. pretty good for a store-like brand.

Stone Creek Root Beer

February 12, 2006

Type: Root Beer Comes In: 20 oz plastic bottle
Available: IL, NJ Obtained in: Springfield, NJ Big Lots
Head: Tiny Sweetener: sugar

so i play baseball every sunday with some friends of mine, at least in the spring and summer. it is quite a good time. but one never knows just how many people are going to show up in a given week. so sometimes there is a game, sometimes we just hit it around and other times no one else shows up at all. anyway, right near the field is a Big Lots store. for those of you unfamiliar with the Big Lots, it is like Odd Lot or other stores that seem to get random stuff that did not sell at other stores for whatever reason. one day at the end of last summer i stopped in there after no one else came to baseball. and they had around 4 kinds of rootbeer i had never had! which is weird as i have had quite a few. this was one of them. (have i written all of this before for a different soda i found that day? probably)
i am quite amazed that this does not have corn syrup as it seems to be a pretty generic soda, from “Douglas Foods.” i can’t find any mention of the soda or the company anywhere else so maybe this is very very old or a failed venture or they just have no web presence.
in any case, it is pretty good. a little bit syrupy but the flavor is good. it completely lacks any sort of head which may be due to it being old. i will have to try another bottle and update if need be. a traditional root beer flavor with a good amount of sweetness, no real other flavors or spice going on, which is good and bad really.
