the same woeful graphic design graces this bottle as on the regular root beer except they added "Diet" and the Splenda ™ logo. oh well, whatever. after trying that soda, i don't have too high hopes for this. not that i would ever have high hopes for a diet soda anyway of course, but they were at the normal diet soda levels and not hoping for more because the fully sugared version was good. got it? good.
so this is another vexing diet beverage. it smells ok. first taste is ok but then it fades to grossness and flagpole licking-ness. BUT not as much as some diet sodas!! woo hoo!! it only tastes KIND OF like metal shavings! and my stomach only SORT of aches after three swallows. wow, alert the media! the most alarming thing is that it does indeed vaguely taste like root beer too! whoa, as Joey from Blossom once said. but only vaguely mind you. one day i will find a diet root beer that truly tastes like root beer. i am not sure why that is so impossible. but then again, i know next to nothing about food science.

Blue Sky Zero Root Beer

December 1, 2014
Filed under: diet root beers — anthony @ 5:00 am
Type: Diet Root Beer Comes In: 12 oz can
Available: everywhere

Obtained in: store in Richmond, VA
Head: Small Sweetener: stevia, erythritol
Caffeine: No
Website: http://hansens.com

I anticipate this being awful. Is that so bad to go into this with low hopes? I figure it may be even better for the drink if i expect it to be bad and it turns out to be ok. so i will stick with that thought.
now i am not quiet sure what this is supposed to be called. the website seems to call it Zero Creamy Root Beer within the Blue Sky Free line. or something like that. plus they changed the can since i bought mine, now it says 'Free' instead of 'Zero' and 'Zero Calorie' replaces 'Stevia Soda' as the large font item. no matter, same thing inside the can i gather.
for a few seconds this is not bad at all, even decent. but then the diet kicks in and it is just awful. Stevia and erythritol may be natural and better for you than the other stuff but they still taste horrible. so maybe if you drink this pretty quickly, taking a new gulp every 2 or 3 seconds so that you delay that terrible later/after taste as long as possible. for the start it is indeed sort of creamy, a traditional root beer taste with a little bit of a bitter edge to it that does wreck it some what. strangely, that bitter taste fades away for about 3 seconds, apparently to recharge and get his big brother, as then it comes back even worse and adds a metallic taste for fun and extra awful. i don't know if it's worse that it starts off ok and then crushingly is bad or what. it gets your hopes up a little before dashing them with an "of course i taste bad, i'm diet!"
Ingredients:triple filtered carbonated water, erythritol, natural flavors (french sweet birch oil, tahitian vanilla), caramel color, stevia leaf extract, citric acid

Bobby Boy’s Barrel Diet Root Beer

the first thing that surprised me about this drink is the color scheme chosen. usually, when there is a diet and a full calorie version of a root beer, the full calorie one is the one that has brown as traditional main, primary color and the diet version has some other color, usually something lighter or more subdued. perhaps this is supposed to make one thing of the lighter caloric content of the diet soda. "hey, Mildred, this bottle right here has a white label, it must be lower in calories than that there brown labelled one! i am gonna get me some of this here DIET bev-er-age!" but those ingenious folks at Bobby Boy's Barrel has reversed that and made the diet soda have the brown label and the full calorie one have the blue label! whoa! the world is on its side, swine are a flying! or not. whatever.
on first taste, i thought "hey, not bad, very syrupy sweet but not a lot of aftertaste. oh wait, there it is. but still not terrible." yeah. especially for aspertame, they have somehow made it not be awful. like before them, they have an aspertame product that is alright. and for something with no calories, actually pretty tasty. there is a root beer taste in there, under a lot of sweetness. nonetheless it is there and not so bad. interesting Bobby Boy, very interesting. i don't think it is quite as good as that one, but it is much better than the other 60 or so diet sodas i have had over the years, which is definitely saying something. i am also not getting the tummy ache i always get with diet sodas so that is another plus here. fine job, Michigan soda maker! i don't know how you did it, but it does not matter much. unless you are lying about the whole "diet" thing and this has sugar or something.

i am wary of this stuff. on the one hand, it is Boylan's, who have made some amazing sodas. but on the other hand, it is diet. back on that first hand the bottle says "Best Body" on it for no reason. on that second hand again, Boylan's has made some not so great sodas too.
i notice too that Boylan's seems to have become Boylan Bottleworks now, the possessive "'s" is gone from the label entirely. and they love citric acid so much they listed it twice in the ingredients. curious…
alright, let us see…. smells ok… taste is not awful, OH no wait, it is! yup, it hits you later of course. gross diet soda taste that waits in a tree and springs on you when you let your guard down and forever wrecks your taste buds. or at least for a half hour. i just don't get it, if the diet sweeteners are so chemically similar to sugar, why do they taste so vile? granted they are sweet but in a different way. and why oh why do i always get a stomach ache from them?
i am sorry to say that this does not really even taste like root beer much at all. very faintly, yes. like if you maybe let a few drops of root beer dry on a piece of aluminum foil and then chewed on it, you get that metallic taste with a hint of root beer.
wow, i can't even finish this at all. or even make it past the neck level. excuse me i have to go cleanse my palette. and find some Natural Boylan's Root Beer to remember what they do right.

Brewbakers Diet Root Beer

Calories: 22 Sodium: 22mg
Carbs: 6g Sugar: 6g
Caffeine: No

ok, this is just freaky, i think it may be a diet soda that tastes ok!! granted it has sugar and honey and corn syrup in addition to the NutraSweet, but still it only has like 22 calories in a bottle. weird. it tastes like root beer! wow. and it only slightly tastes like metal after 45 seconds or so! and my stomach only hurts a little bit after drinking 1/2 the bottle.
now, to be clear, this is not a good root beer, it is an excellent DIET root beer though, probably the best i have had. i know that may not mean a lot to you as i dislike pretty much all of them, but if i suddenly had to severely limit my sugar intake i think i'd order some of this. i am scared by that thought though.
unlike the regular root beer from Brewbakers, this actually has nutrition info, although the label is about the same bad quality of a color photo copy. so it is not so easy to make out i can't read the ingredients very well either. even worse in fact. they seem to run into the graphics background which is the same color as the ingredients font. on the website the labels look totally different so maybe they have improved this issue lately.

can it be?! a diet soda that tastes good?! yeh, actually it does. weird. yeh, it has a slight aftertaste of NutraSweet but now i even less understand why other diet drinks with aspartame taste so awful. leave it to a NJ brewer to do it right i suppose. granted it is not amazing, but it is in fact better than many non-diet brews i have sampled. i may even finish the whole bottle. decently creamy, pretty sweet, but that weird sweet of nutrasweet although it is not overwhelming as i said already. if i was diabetic or whatever, i would drink this i think.

so how will this be? every time i sample a new root beer i think that to myself. with the diet sodas it is more "ok, how bad could it be? maybe it will be good for once!" but i try not to get my hopes up too high. that is harder when i have tried the regular, full-on sugar version of a soda though. from that one i feel like i know that the company can or cannot make a good soda, so the diet is expected to follow along the same lines. sadly that does not always happen at all. well, not really "sadly" i suppose, more "unexpectedly" or "illogically" or "your assumption was dumb Anthony."
i do somewhat doubt that Al Capone ever drank a diet soda, let alone had a secret recipe for one, but i will let that slide. as long as at least one drink in their soda line came from Mr. Capone or bore his name at some point, even if Geraldo did not find it on prime time TV, then they can go with it.
this actually is not so bad tasting. wow. i would never choose it over even a regular A&W or something mind you, but i am not getting sick feeling which is often the case. it even sort of tastes like root beer too! pretty creamy and very smooth with just a slight metal taste in the middle, not to start and not in the aftertaste, it just lasts for a moment and then is gone, like that cute guy you saw was on the bus this morning when you missed it.

at last, the final offering from this company! well, besides their non-root/birch beer or sarsaparilla offerings, obviously.
i don't think i should have reviewed this soda today though. my tummy was already feeling a little weird and diet soda causes such things to happen out of no where on its own anyway. oh well, too late to turn back now i guess! carry on anthony!
as with many diet sodas, this seems alright for about a second, but then it is vile and i must rinse my mouth out to get rid of the awful awful, terrible aftertaste. there must be a word for that taste but i don't know it. it is not the metallic taste which i sometimes get, it is worse.
it seems that diet root beer has an entirely different flavor that it is shooting for for whatever reason as many of them taste similar but not very much at all like their full-sugar brethren. and i don't like that diet root beer flavor, whatever it is supposed to be.
this is ok, if you must drink diet. if you can have regular soda, just do it and walk a little to burn those extra calories, this is not really worth it.

hhhmm, a diet soda, hooray! maybe..? i think i have higher hopes for micro-breweries getting diet sodas right than i do for the bigger brewers or soda companies. so this might be yummy!
they went with only a slightly lighter brown for the color scheme on this one versus that of their full sugar variety. and the hat on the anthropomorphized barrel/keg is holding playing cards instead of pistols and sporting a hat emblazoned with '2.2' on it, since that is how many calories are in here. see, they add agave syrup as well as splenda so that give it a bit of carbs and calories. i can't say i have liked many drinks with agave as the main sweetener so my hopes are still in check here.
ok, it is ok. i think the agave does control the diet awfulness somewhat. but it is not good or even close to it. my stomach is still mad at me for drinking it. there is still somewhat of a metal taste that is not covered by anything. the root beer flavor is there in the background but mostly it is pretty bland. i have had much worse, that is for sure.

ug, i guess this is what i get for putting off reviewing sodas, this huge backlog of diet ones. this one i got some time ago and assumed i had reviewed it already when i went through my root beer fridge to see what was left to do. but then i realized i had not. and i was sad since i knew this was kind of old and i had best get to it as soon as possible. so here i am, getting to it. or perhaps putting it off as long as i can, even another moment or two. although with low expectations perhaps this will be ok.
alright, let me clear my palette and i will try it…
whoa, for a soda that is at least 2 years old, this thing has a buttload of carbonation! and it is not so bad. well, at least it does not have that awful diet soda aftertaste! which is a major step/breakthrough in beverage technology! wow. getting past that fact though, it does not really taste like much of anything at all. maybe that is the trade-off, avoid the terrible taste along with any good taste. i would love to go into more details about the flavor but there is not one. let me try again, swish it around or something fancy. nope, i just get that carbonation tickle on my tongue. so this soda is not bad or good, just there and wet.
