holy crap, 240 calories?! 50 grams of carbs?! 135mg of sodium? that is all insane. well, the carbs/sugar is not too terrible, a lot pf root beers are in that range, but that's a lot of calories and sodium. i do like salty caramel though so hopefully they pull it off.
it seems to be the trend these days to do a butterscotch root beer, ever since Dang! first did it six or seven years ago. it is a fine flavor combo and i am all for flavor variations so keep doing it soda companies! I did not expect AJ Stephens to be the next to branch out in such a fashion as they seem to be a pretty traditional, established brand, but kudos to them for doing new things.
so this is a very sweet soda! all of the butterscotch root beers are really, so that is not shocking in itself. it is not sickeningly sweet though unlike a couple of those. the root beer flavor is also more present, it does not come off as just a butterscotch soda, there is more there. it is not a drink i would reach for too often, i don't want something THIS sweet very much, but as an occasional thing, i am all for it. it is rich and smooth and creamy, the carbonation doesn't impinge on the flavor profile. well done AJ!

ah, yes, now i am seeing… i actually am unsure if this is different than the soda above but they were sold at the same store so i don't think it is just a repackaging. but they do have the same ingredients and the same UPC code so maybe… ok, taste em and see anthony! nope, they are different for sure. this one has a foam that disappates much more quickly. the taste is different too. not as overwhelmed with fizzyness, one can taste the brew a bit more. there is a slight anise taste here also i think, not as strong as the sarsaparilla though. still a worth brew though.

ok, so someone wrote to me and told me where in Boston to get the other AJ Stephens sodas, so my good friend Michael went there one day and got a whole slew of em for me! this is a pretty tasty soda but the carbonation is overpowering. my mouth tingles so much that i am barely able to taste the flavor of the soda. it has a slight bite of bitterness and you can faintly detect the cane sugar taste. i am enjoying it but it is not the best thing out there. perhaps the non-cane sugar one is better. i will soon see…

maybe it is because i have had this for a while, but this is pretty bad. very little carbonation (which i'd expect for a soda sitting for a couple months). but the taste is very bland and dull. a little too generic i suppose. drinkable though, it is not all herb-y and grody or anything. for a store brand that costs like $.50 for the bottle, it is ok. i will have to try it again when i can drink it fresh.

Alco Select Brown Barrel Original Root Beer

i suspect that this is the same thing as the other "Select" root beers i have reviewed (safeway, stop n shop)but i could be wrong. that top logo thing seems the same, just with the particular store chain in its place. indeed. i quite like their packaging, the light and dark brown stripes and the always classic barrel motiff, very nice! the taste is alright, about the same as most store brands, sweet at first and then you get that sort of burnt/slightly bitter taste at the end as it goes down. could be the aluminum can breaking down or something i suppose. nothing special at all but for 6/$1 or whatever, you can't expect a lot i don't think. i just wish they knew if it had corn syrup or sugar or both. i would guess mostly high fructose corn syrup in here though, it has that taste.

one of the coolest bottles i have seen. very simple, yellow ink silk screened onto the brown bottle. and a really good root beer! kinda light and just refeshing. but sort of a spicey taste happening in the aftertaste. a very unique and good drink here folks. it seems like it is clear but i am too lazy to go to the kitchen and get a glass to pour some in to find out. i am jealous of the good stuff in WI these days! many thanks to Stuart for sending me such great sodas!

All Star Extracts Root Beer Extract

usually with an extract you know what to expect. the general idea is to either make root beer soda or make something that tastes like root beer soda, such as cake or ribs or tofu or whatever. so the flavor has to be pretty traditional and normal and unexciting. once in a while you get something that bucks that trend, such as company that makes four different root beers or just goes off the path with creativity. i applaud that stuff. but then occasionally you get something awful with no resemblance to root beer or anything even slightly tasty. this extract falls into that last camp. it is awful. i don't even know what this tastes like. i tried to mix it in varying ratios and it is always bad. it is bitter even with a ton of sugar. it is just a shame and has no connection to root beer. skip this one and get a decent or excellent extract. please.

the first strike here is that this is an "Artificially Flavored Root Beer Soda." now, who would decide that that is a good thing to put on your product? seriously? does that entice people to buy it? you have natural flavors supposedly too, why not tout that instead? the graphic design as a whole is pretty weak though. not that many generic store brands do a great job on design work anyway, but they really dropped the ball extra hard on their friends' toe on this one. such is the way of the world though. why spend money on making it look nice when people want to pay as little as possible for their sugary bubble drink.
i don't know what this costs in a store. i do know it is going to cost me a good amount since i traded for it and the deal was 2 or 3 or so glass bottles which i will have to ship, so probably around $12 maybe? hey when i am running out of sodas to review, $12 is a decent deal for a new one, even a generic. i don't think i would do it again, or for just the store brand really as this trade involved 2 other sodas also. i may have been able to find this eventually myself, even though they have no stores on the east coast, yet i gave in and just did the trade.
this soda is not offensive. it is fine and exactly what you expect for what it is. generic root beer, nothing more, nothing less. tasty but not great or comparable to good stuff.

this smells like root beer but tastes like fizzy sugar water with a slight root beer tinge to it. i dunno. it is kinda ok but i wouldn't guess it was root beer i do not think if just given a swallow of it. so in that regard it kinda fails at the goal of being root beer. which is not to say that all root beers must taste like the traditional flavor, but it should at least taste pretty good and bear some slight resemblance to that original taste. some sodas do it well, this one does not so much.

this is kinda bad. loads of carbonation, very little flavor. i suppose that is what i'd expect for soda i got for 25 cents in a machine, but still, i hoped for more. i don't think i can even finish this, it is so bad and not worthy of drinking or even being called by the mighty name "root beer." i really should use the money back guarentee on this one but i'd spend more on gas on the trip than i would get back. that is how they get ya i guess.
