sadly, this does not at all live up to their birch beers, which i love. i had high hopes when i finally saw this in a store. i don’t think that biased me at all though. the cane sugar and the yucca extract in this combine for a weird taste maybe? i would not think that is the cause of the badness but perhaps. it is not a very good taste. it is bearable and decent if you drink it with a meal or something but by itself it is not something i would pick to have often. very unfortunate since this probably the only really bad soda i have had from this NJ bottleworks. also sad since it is now one of the more readily available glass bottled sodas in my area. whoa is me.

Ingredients: carbonated water, cane sugar, natural and artificial flavors, caramel color, natural yucca extract, citric acid, sodium benzoate (preserves freshness)
I’m trying to develop a taste for this one as well as their diet. However that rotten smell is overpowering.
Their red birch root beer is good
To be honest i didnt even finish it…my opion the worst root beer i have had yet…im hopefull for the natural rootbeer from this company.
Yeah, this root beer sucks. I’d give it a 55 out of 100. I’m just surprised that “The Great American Root Beer Showdown” had Boylan’s ranked at number 1! Maybe they tried Boylan’s natural root beer?

Umm, perhaps it was an old bottle or they’ve changed it? I mean, I love root beer and their root beer is one of my favorites. I’ve also had their Black Cherry soda three times, the first time it was quite possibly the worst thing I’ve ever tasted. I tried it again a few months later, it was pretty good. The first bottle I tried had to have been either old or had been overexposed to sunlight, then again maybe they have a problem with consistency…
This root beer was pretty bad. I gave it a 50.
I think Boylan’s is another one that has been inconsistent for me. At times I’ve enjoyed it, at others it’s been too flat, one-dimensional or just plain uninteresting. At least they’re using cane sugar.
Boylan’s Birch Beer is actually quite good. Their grape and orange soda’s aren’t bad either.
Their “yellow label” Root Beer, however…is absolutely disgusting. I had to pour it down the sink after two sips, I’ve never had to do that before. I try every Root Beer I can get my hands on, from Bulldog to Zuberfizz to Hank’s to IBC to Bundaberg to Frosties to Sioux City. This is by far the worst I’ve ever had, it tastes bitter and smells terrible. I still have hope for the “Red Label” variety, but I’ve never seen that in stores where I’m from.
I’d give “Yellow Label” a 15 and that’s being generous. I *did* take another sip, after all.
When you first taste Boylan’s, it’s not bad but then the after taste kicks in and it’s just weird.
[…] am not sure when this switch happened, but i recall when i first reviewed Boylan’s Root Beer many years ago and not enjoying it much at all. in the intervening years i have had it again, often […]
