Bulldog Handcrafted Root Beer

so this root beer IS actually bottled and distributed in Oregon but you can get it in the Bulldog brewpubs too. it is slightly strange that there are 3 different sweeteners but whatever. in any case, this is an excellent soda. creamy, smooth, sweet with a hint of honey. actually i think it is one of the only brews that pulls off having honey in it well. i love honey but often it comes off as almost rancid. not here though at all. it tastes fresh and good. wow, this may just be one of the best root beers i have ever had! i think someone has at last dethroned Boylan’s Creamy Red at the top spot. whoa. not overly carbonated or too foamy or anything of the sort. i have to try this in a frosted mug, the next bottle is dedicated to that task. so get this if at all possible. now to try and arrange some sort of daily delivery for me!
UPDATE: word is that this WILL soon be distro’ed nationally! hoorah!!

Bulldog root beer is the best I’ve ever had, Fortunately, the World Market near me always has a few six packs of it… well they did, until the last time I went, they switched from six packs to four packs.

This is the best root beer that I have ever tasted. Very satisfying, creamy and full-flavored. No wierd aftertastes. World market caries this, but always seems to be sold out or very few 4-packs available. If you find this rootbeer, better stock-up, as it is not readily available in every World Market.

I tried Bulldog based on the great comments and found it disappointing. Maybe it’s the honey, i don’t know. But it wasn’t what I’d call a good rootbeer. I’ve always liked Hanks and will debate on going back to that or try others. But having tried in excess of 50 different rootbeers, i’d have to put Bulldog in the middle of the pack, certainly not the top.!

has a great and powerful root beer taste. i don’t like a wimpy root beer, but it was a little too sweet. it has the perfect root beer taste, if it were only a little less sweet. could stand a little more foam too, for my taster. i like a foamy head on my root beer. love that it is made with cane sugar rather than corn syrup, and would rather it didn’t have artificial flavor. looking forward to trying the boylan’s natural

Honey is a tad too strong, not enough carbonation. Still good, though.

I discovered Bulldog in West Seattle, at Thriftways. For a supermarket I was stunned at the incredible root beer selection they have.

Prior to discovering The Root Beer Store in Redmond, Wa I would drop into W. Seattle and pick up a 24 of Bulldog!

Unfortunately, it’s not available in Canada. 🙁

    It’s one of my favourites!

  7. This one is just “good”. Nothing too spectacular. It’s better than your average A&W, but it seems that the flavor is just kind of blah and not very strong. It lacks any form of punch. For me, it’s an 80.

I just found this brand for the first time at a local BevMo in California. Other than fairly modest carbonation, I found it to be an excellent, somewhat-subtle product. It was a quite smooth product; went down real well on a rather warm day. I’ll add it to my small list of favorites.

I’m new to rating and still developing my palette, but I do know this was better than the Red Arrow we opened the same night.

  10. I am drinking a bottle right now as I right this. It does not make my top ten, I gave it a 75. I love honey, but for some reason every root beer I try that has honey in it, I simply dont care for as much as sugar. I like how you said Honey can come across as rancid. I think as my kids agree, think honey has a “cheese” taste in root beer.

Bulldog is definitely one of THE best root beers I’ve ever had the privilege of tasting. Back when I lived in southern Michigan I could get it whenever I wanted from World Market but I have only seen it once since I moved to Southwestern Wisconsin. Luckily, I have Sprecher’s and 1919 here but what I wouldn’t do for some Bulldog every once in a while!

  12. It’s like candy in a bottle. The vanilla & honey give it a real kick, makes it go down like a liquid dessert. It’s delicious, it’s unique, it’s unforgettable. I’ve had about six of these and I haven’t been able to find any more since. Which is a real shame, because they make for an amazing addition to an ice cream float. To Team_Tia above, I live in Canada and was able to find it here. There’s a store called Soda Pop Central in Whitby, Ontario that sells it, but I’m not from there.
If I had to make one complaint, it’s the label. They call it “Bulldog” but there are two pitbulls on the front, what’s the deal with that?
So far, this is by far the best root beer I’ve ever had. It’s in a class all its own, I have nothing else to compare it to. Needless to say, it’s a 95, bare minimum.

Amendment from my 8/13/13 comment. I’ve recently been able to purchase a case of Bulldog–and boy was I excited! Avast! How disappointing it was to taste the first one and feel such utter disappointment. I guess back in my Michigan days my palate was not quite as developed as it is now. Bulldog definitely falls out of my Top 5, probably even Top 10. Very watery and narrow-bodied has been my consistent feeling with a slight yet constant metallic taste from start to after-taste. So sad to kind of look at the rest of my case with reluctance and regret! Down to an 82-83.

  14. I just tried bulldog again, and all I have to say that this would make my top 10 list of root beers. I was wrong when I previously stated that it does not have a strong flavor. In fact, I was in love with the strong flavor that it actually does have! It has a very good/strong flavor. It tastes a lot like steelhead root beer, but without the heavy vanilla taste. I could buy a pallet worth of bulldog. It is that good. I have to up my initial score to a 90. Very tasty stuff.
