ah, the 451th soda review!! woo hoo!! from 400 to 450 went pretty quick. good good. maybe i will get to 500 even one day! as i am writing this in december of 2009, i am already scheduling stuff almost a year out, which is weird but good i think.
i had no idea this soda was made, let alone bottled until i got an email from the mighty Rick offering to send or trade some with me. of course i took him up on it and now here it is up for review!
from what i gather, Schmohz is a relatively small microbrewery, mainly of beer. they made this soda to benefit Sammi Rae of Hope who help people with ill family members keep their homes. a fine cause. it would add awfulness to terribleness to lose your house after helping battle some disease or what have you. so yeah, there is that.
this soda is interesting. it has a unique flavor, which i commend them for. yet it is not a flavor i really love. it is fine and reasonably tasty but it is not wonderful. it starts off a little sharp, develops a bit of a spiced tinge and then fades away. the expected “root beer” taste is there a bit, but in the background. it does not have a real strong flavor that demands your attention in general. this may or may not be a good thing for you. for me, i would like it to be a bit more *whoa!*, you know? i find it a bit watered down or something. for the double listing of sugar i had hoped for an even sweeter drink. it is fine as it is but it is not crazy sweet.
i do quite like their ingredient list, simple and full of sugar and no parenthetical qualification of the sodium benzoate to be sure we know they put it there as a preservative, not just for fun and giggles. i never did get that, why or when did it become such a common practice to explain that one ingredient? or most preservatives really, that being the most common one? why not explain the function of all of the ingredients? “water (for wetness), sugar (as a sweetener), natural and artificial flavors (for taste), citric acid (as an acid)”. anyway, back to the matter at hand…
this is a decent soda. i’d drink it but i am not going to run out and order more unless i suddenly strike it rich and want to at once donate to a fine cause and get some liquid refreshment.

Damn, as a native Michigander, I’d hoped for better from this one, especially since this brewery is highly regarded. I really wish that just one brewery that offers root beer would do it right and actually brew it the old-fashioned way with yeast. It’s not as though they don’t have the facilities or are lacking for yeast.
