Margo’s Bark Root Beer

ah, at long last! i am not sure how i heard about this soda but i have been meaning to get some for quite a while. they sell it on their website but i have been trying to avoid buying full cases of sodas i have never tried, in part because of the danger of it being awful and having paid $3 or so per bottle for bad soda, but mostly for the general cost, even $3 for a good soda is a lot, really. so i ordered from some mail order place along with a couple other brands i needed and some ginger beer for my dad.
you can read all about the story of this company on the website too, but basically it goes like this: kids makes root beer for a science fair project, people like it, they go into business and proceeds go to help shelter dogs. not cats mind you. or chinchillas, just dogs. which is fine, someone should help them after all. so that is definitely kind and a great thing.
the ingredient list intrigues me, solid selection of spices. usually they do not list just what is flavoring the soda, so it is a refreshing change to see that. although i think they may be missing some kind of root beer extract or other root beer flavoring as that is not list and i doubt the herbs and spices would make it taste like root beer. anyway…
the head on this soda is very very large and very long lasting. which is a nice visual thing but serves little other purpose. beyond that this drink is kind of disappointing. perhaps because i had high expectations for it, it must be good if so many people told them to sell it! and it is decent, definitely better than canned root beers or whatever. yet it does not surprise my taste buds or even impress as just a standard, traditional root beer. mainly i think the flavoring is too weak. the wintergreen is there which is nice, not too strong, so it is ok for that. but i wanted a hearty molasses taste. or maybe a big clove kick. even the vanilla is too subtle. it is fine. i would drink it with a pizza and be happy but i would not savor it or be too sad when it is gone.
nonetheless, try it, it is a good cause and very selfless of them. not all ways to ingest sugar will help some stray dog get a new chance at life after all.

  1. I was not impressed. This left a wintergreen taste in my mouth, but not a root beer flavor. I gave this a 60

Pretty good root beer but nothing to wow me.
