i am not quite sure how i came upon this soda. i think it was from my saved Google search for “birch beer” which gives me an email each day of new stuff with the words “birch beer” in it. my “root beer” search actually gives me a good amount of results every day, but the “birch beer” one i only get an email on about twice a week. very rarely is that info anything i care about at all. which is not to say the “root beer” one is much better, mainly it is links to stories about Lindsay Lohan being spotted with a root beer after rehab or Milla Kunis saying her first meal after ‘Black Swan’ was a huge root beer and some burger thing from In and Out. occasionally though i do find out about a new soda, and that makes it all worth it for me.
i always have high hopes for clear/white birch beers, they make me happy more consistently than other kinds of soda i would say. of course i have had some bad clear birches but they are less frequent than the good ones. before i get to that, i must say i find this line a little surprising. not that i doubt the legacy of Elvira, i just somewhat doubt her celebrity appeal at this point in time. she seems like a great lady but i think she was much more popular a couple decades back. i am not sure if the picture on the bottle is recent or old but either way it is Elvira in a classic “scared” pose in front of some spooky trees or bushes or something, looking very white and black. i suppose “Banshee” was about the best spooky word that could be rhymed with “Birch Beer” or used to make a play on words like the “sCream Soda” or “Lemon sLime.” whatever, it works. so the label is good, sticks with the horror-ish theme. i am also surprised that a California company decided to make a birch beer but no root beer. wacky indeed. perhaps Elvira is a huge birch beer fan.
now the soda inside… it is alright. the wintergreen is there as expected the sweetness is good. but it is all a little too watery for me. i want to be hit more with the flavor. this is light and refreshing, which is fine too, i want something super yummy to just down after mowing the lawn in august and this would fit that bill well. but overall, i want a drink that i will take notice of, that will stop me in what i am doing and makes me think “whoa! goodness here! ok, back to whatever i was doing! what was i doing….”
