Lost Dog Cafe Root Beer

this one was a bit strange. the cafe itself seemed very cool, lots of yummy menu items and best of all, several huge coolers full of glass bottled drinks including several microbrew root beers including Dominion and Hanks. but that was not why i was there. i stepped up to the counter and ordered some of their root beer, no ice. that actually turned out to be quite expensive for a medium sized foam cup of soda. but no matter, all in the interest of expanding my root beer knowledge, right? yes indeed. but to only have their own brand on tap seemed curious, although I am sure it is easier than having it bottled instead or as well.
i actually drank this in my car as the cafe was packed full so i couldn’t sit at a table inside, and the night was a bit chilly and i left my jacket in the car so i didn’t think sitting on a bench on the sidewalk was too good of a plan. but that is fine. i can sit in a parking garage and sample some root beer, no problem. again, showing my dedication to the root beer tasting, although feeling a bit silly.
the taste is fairly standard really. it is creamy and sweet in a nice balance with a good level of carbonation. there is a bit of a rooty feel to it that slightly sets it apart yet it is not really enough to raise it up to higher levels. if there was a location nearby I may stop in occasionally, but it wouldn’t be a go-to choice. I hear the food is excellent so if i do happen upon one again and i have time, i will be sure to sample that end of the business as well.

Lost dog root beer is old dominion root beer re-branded. It’s a trick dominion does with their ale a lot.

Lost Dog also used to provide 1 refill on root beers, but I was told last night that they no longer do.
