strangely i have seen every other flavor of GUS soda, but never the root beer. eventually I gave up and traded for it with the resourceful Brad. I come into this a bit biased as i have seen reviews of this drink from a couple other websites and none seemed to like it at all. plus they proclaim it “not too sweet” right there on the label. if you have read this site at all before you know i like sweet stuff, often the sweeter the better. but i will keep an open mind here, but with low expectations.
the label fits in with the more natural sodas, and since this is 100% natural, that makes sense. it is mainly white with an image of birch tree branches and vanilla bean pods along with a flower, leaf and something else i don’t recognize. they say it has clove also but nothing there looks like clove to me, although i have never seen a clove plant to know if it has distinctive leaves or flowers so i could be wrong. it is an ok label. not bad, not incredible, but well done for what it is.
i am very surprised at the head on this drink. it is rather large and it lasts a very long time. so it tastes… not horrible. as i said, my bar was very low but this is not the worst drink i have had. it is down there among the bad ones, for me at least. yes, it is too lightly sweetened but that could work if it were not so harsh and bitter otherwise. yes, harsh and bitter. it just is not a smooth, nice drink, it fills my taste buds with the wrong combination of stuff. the birch is there a bit and more the dominant flavor than is usual with a root beer, but it does not have the nice wintergreen smoothness of a birch beer. the vanilla is much more a way in the back flavor which i only really notice for an instant when i first sip it. it is then mauled up and overtaken by the harsh other stuff. maybe it is clove, maybe it is something else, but whatever it is, i don’t approve. if this is growing up, count me out. first star to the left and straight on til morning!

Thanks for taking the bullet for us! It just seems to me that there are some sodas, and root beer would be one of them, that wouldn’t work “dry.”
