yes Berghoff has changed their recipe! it sort of makes the “since 1921” proclamation a little weird to me, but no matter, they HAVE been going since then i suppose, just not with the same product, but neither have a lot of businesses when you get down to it.
they have not changed their design much, but there was no need to, it is pretty great as it is. at this point it is a bit generic, but as one of the companies that defined how microbrew root beer labels look with mainly shades of brown and orange, they have the right to continue with it, i suppose that makes them iconic or something.
it has been at least 15 years since i had a bottle of Berghoff so any comparisons that can be made between the old and new really cannot be done by me.
this is indeed a root beer. if i were to try to find the prototypical root beer, this would definitely be in the running. it is kind of creamy, a bit rooty with some herbal tastes to it and reasonably carbonated. which is fine and great but i want more, i want something extraordinary! having a cook out, bbq, pizza night? this is perfect. after a hard day of yard work? grab a Berghoff! want to really savor the flavor and make the root beer the focal point, this probably isn’t where i’d go.
