Smucker’s Real Brew Draft Root Beer

another find from the good gourmet from his Canadian adventures! I am not exactly sure what to call this. is it “Real Brew Draft Root Beer?” that is kind of a very generic name. It is made by Smucker Natural Foods, so I suppose i will call it “Smucker Real Brew Draft Root Beer.” after a bit of searching I found that this is actually made by the same people who made Natural Brew Draft Root Beer! different ingredients though so I am in the clear. this one is more for the Canadian market while the Natural Brew is the US offering, despite both being made in the US. I may have to change the name of that old one to reflect the actual company name. I also should seek that one out again to see if it changed recipes, very possible as it has been 22 years now.
the flavor on this brew is pretty good. they proclaim “a complex flavour of sweet birch, licorice root, anise and other natural flavours” so first you know they are Canadian (or British). the flavor is rather complex i suppose, a lot going on there. i don’t taste much licorice, perhaps a touch, so that is not the overwhelming thing here for you licorice-phobes out there. the birch is even less present in my mind. anise i probably taste more than either of those but still it does not dominate. mostly it has a sassafras taste, with some sarsaparilla under that. it is pretty herbal and decently sweet with a solid head and smooth close. it is fine. it does not wow me. if anything i am getting a little stomach ache from it for some reason. I would drink it again but i’m ok not doing so.
