it is now 7 years since I reviewed Cherry Republic Sprecher Boom Chugga Lugga Cherry Root Beer. yes, I know that is a very long name, mostly that is my own fault for not knowing just what to call it. they seem to have shortened it as the ‘Boom Chugga Lugga’ is now on the side, kind of as a slogan or tagline or something. I seem to have neglected the fact that the old one was a ‘root bear’ not a ‘root beer’ which would of course cause purists to not even try this or acknowledge it is in fact a root beer. (which is very obvious.) there is no mention of Sprecher anymore, although I would guess it is still made and bottled by them, but it is not in the distinctive Sprecher 16 oz bottle now. they also changed the recipe a lot, so the re-review is very valid. gone is the high fructose corn syrup, say hello to beet sugar. granted I have no idea if sugar from beets is actually better for you than sugar from corn, but we’ll just assume it is for now. I just hope it tastes good.
a few reviews ago I mentioned how I like ginger beers second best to root beers in my soda ranking scale. but cherry soda is also up there. so I think the potential for well done a crossover between root beer and cherry soda is quite high. which is not to say just because I like two things, they will be good together. ketchup and salty caramel don’t mix kids, don’t try it!
i can’t say this has much of a root beer taste to it. mainly it is a very sweet cherry soda. which is not a bad thing, nonetheless we are here for the root beer i think. yeah, this is super sweet, almost to the point of being too much. i can sort of taste a little bit of root beer in there at the end but still, just straight up cherry on the whole. that makes it harder to rate. it does taste quite good, but it loses points for a lack of root beer-ness, which is a weird thing to say.
