another soda from the fine folks at Sprecher! it is actually rather tricky for me to review these energy drink root beers as ordinarily I review drinks in the evening, when I really do not need energy, but today, as I neglected to do my weekly review ahead of time, it is now the morning so I may as well drink this thing, see how it is.
I am glad they did not throw it crazy stuff here like most energy drinks do. not to say that guarana or whatever is bad for you, I have no idea, but it affects the taste I think. caffeine does not seem to, from my experiences. that is all they put in this one, 70 mg of caffeine. by comparison, a medium Dunkin’ Donuts coffee has about 170 mg and a can of Coca Cola has about 35 mg, so this is somewhere around a cup of black or green tea in reality and that is not all that much caffeine. that too is fine by me, I really only have caffeine on rare occasions unless it is for training, then I do use some caffeinated drinks for long bike rides or races.
I just noticed the can is supposed to look like a battery apparently, with positive and negative ends printed on the top and bottom parts of the can on two sides. that is amusing and a fine touch, good stuff Sprecher!
this tastes pretty good, about on par with their standard root beer. that is a relief. too often that is not the case. granted I don’t think their normal root beer is really amazing but it is ok, better than mass produced stuff. the honey does not come through enough for me. I love honey and want that to be a stronger flavor if you are going to put it in at all. with that said, the sweetness is fine, the taste is fine, just a little too sharp in the carbonation for me I would say. if I were to have to pick a caffeinated root beer I had to drink though, this might be it.
