two sarsaparilla reviews in a row?! and two foreign ones at that?! this is crazy stuff. well, when the fine Eric is on your side all things are possible! it is very appreciated when people trade or acquire things for me. I think it is very cool that Coca Cola made a unique recipe for Malaysia. I mean, they do make various different sodas for different parts of the world with flavors more suited to what the local population seems to enjoy. if you have ever been to that Coca Cola pavilion / cafe thing at DisneyWorld you know what I am talking about. ergo it makes sense that they would get in on sarsaparilla being a thing in Malaysia and also use the A&W name for such a product as it has some brand recognition and cache. perhaps the unusual size and shape can is the norm for that area as well? I have no idea.
the ingredients are quite different than normal A&W or Canadian A&W so this is for sure a whole other recipe.
one of the first things I notice when sampling it is just how harsh the carbonation is. it very strongly dominates the experience of this drink. I enjoy some carbonation, sure, but when it is overdone it is not a pleasant or good thing. getting past that, there is a herbal / medicinal flavor to it, not really in a bad way necessarily. i am not quite sure just what herbs or medicine to reference though. perhaps sort of anise, sort of a hearty cola flavor even. that seems in line with other Malaysian sarsaparillas I have tried, but different enough to tell them apart. of that group this is basically in the middle. others have a better taste and carbonation feel while some just overdo the medicinal aspect. the balance they strike is good beyond the carbonation issue. I would never seek this out myself but as something different it is fine.
