yup, the store brand for Piggly Wiggly! probably sold at other stores too as it does not have the Piggly Wiggly name anywhere on it. it is kind of not so good either. in addition, Piggly Wiggly scared me, maybe it was just the one location i went to, so don’t hold that against the whole chain, their website is nice and junk. so yeh, this is not so good. not awful, but just generic with some bad bitter taste thrown in. i think i would go to a different store if i had the option and i lived near a PW, as i now call Piggly Wiggly. i wonder if that is a common thing, “hey Merle! need anythin’ from da PW?! i is headed yonder to that there gen’ral store cuz’n they gots a sale on chicken necks and junior’s birthday is a comin’!” somehow i doubt it as “Piggly Wiggly” is pretty fun to say out loud.

yet another store brand. everytime i see that i have a store brand soda to review i get a little frustrated with myself that i bought it to begin with. i mean, they pretty much all taste the same so it is sort of silly to keep buying them. plus they take up a lot of fridge space. good thing i have a seperate root beer fridge now i’d say! also, i tend to keep them for a long time before reviewing them. i feel like i should get them out of the way though. this one is probably almost a year old now, which should be fine. yeah, it seems to taste just fine. sweet yet generic, which is fine for a picnic or for chugging or maybe for having a submarine sandwich or something. just like every other store brand.

Ingredients: carbonated water, high fructose corn sweetener, natural and artificial flavor, caramel color, sodium benzoate (preservative), citric acid

A-Treat Diet Root Beer

August 23, 2005
Filed under: diet root beers — anthony @ 4:41 pm
Type: Diet Root Beer Comes In: 12 oz can, 20 oz plastic bottle, 2L plastic bottle
Available: NJ, PA, online Obtained in: somewhere in PA
Head: Small Sweetener: aspartame (NutraSweet)
Caffeine: No
Website: http://www.a-treat.com/

as with most diet sodas, you take a sip and think it is not so bad, perhaps THIS is the diet soda that breaks the trend of awful diet sodas. and then it hits you, the terrible aftertaste. then it is all ruined and you dread the next sip because you know what will happen. way too much carbonation also, i am all burpy now! tee hee. i think my stomach is unhappy with my decision to give another diet soda a chance also. it tastes remotely like root beer if that is any consolation.

i suspected they made a root beer also but i had never seen it with my own eyes. or heard any tales of it either. strange really that the places i can kegs of soda from only have the birch beer, perhaps the root beer does not come in that form? curious. anyway, the root beer is good for a canned soda actually. a little bit of an herbal taste on top of the usual, expected, standard root beer flavor. sweet in a sugary way, definitely fructose i think, corn syrup that is really i would bet. if you can get it at a good price, i would recommend this beverage, but i would not spend lots of money to mail order or anything.

Zota Green Tea Soda Root Beer

August 19, 2005
Filed under: root beers — anthony @ 4:05 pm
Type: Root Beer Comes In: 12oz glass bottle
Available: IL, VT Obtained in: VT somewhere
Head: Small Sweetener: dehydrated cane juice
Caffeine: No
Website: http://www.zotasoda.com/

ah, another organic soda! with no corn syrup! rad indeed. you can taste the difference for sure, the cane sugar taste is distinct. and as i rather like that taste, it is nice indeed. the green tea aspect is also there and adds a different taste to the soda, also not in a bad way at all. it kind of makes it taste almost like a root beer iced tea. usually i think the more natural kind of root beers do not come off well, although i very much want them to, but this one really does live up to my expectations. i would not quite say it taste that much like traditional root beer, but the flavor is there enough to be recognizable as such. kind of an herbal taste going on with pretty light carbonation. nice. i wish i knew where i got this so i could get more. oh well, i am sure i will see it again sometime.

Maine Root. Organic Sarsaparilla

this soda also has only the three ingredients that are listed on the root beer label. their website claims that they tone down the clove so that the wintergreen taste can come through more. i can see that somewhat but it is not a strong wintergreen at all. plus i would think if you are going for having a wintergreen tasting beverage you would call it a birch beer. oh well, to each their own. I would say i may even enjoy this more that the root beer although it does have a similar taste, rather simple and not too strong at all. the cane sugar definitely comes through again too. i hope they get some distribution in NJ because this is a very good soda!

i like this soda. but there is something stopping it from being in that upper sphere of root beers. i mean, the packaging is kind of lame, but besides that, maybe it is a little watery or a bit of a lack of carbonation. yeh, both of those things are faults and accurate ones at that! don’t get me wrong, it is tasty, but just not amazing. kind of creamy, kind of sweet, just not enough of anything i guess.
