i also got this soda in that mixed case i spoke of above. actually when i arrived at the factory and went in the store, no one came out, so i just assumed i could do what i did, that is make my own order up. turned out i could and they were happy i did. this soda also has a more subtle taste. but it works for a birch beer much more to me. there seems to be a pretty prominent menthol taste here, wintergreen perhaps. it makes for an almost medicinal flavor upon first sip or if you put it down for a minute and let your palette clear. i am undecided about how i feel about that. it does not offend me, it just alarms me each time. which is fine and slightly amusing. at least i am awake. it is not too unique or just flat out great a flavor either, but it works well for a white birch.

so i knew i was going to boston to visit some friends and i had heard about this soda bottling plant in conneticutt, pretty much on the way, so i planned my route so i could stop by and check it out. and stop by i did! indeed. it was pretty rad in fact, just in the middle of a pretty residential neighborhood, syrup making on one side of the road, bottling on the other. i picked up an empty box and filled it with various sodas. that included, of course, this root beer. it is good but not spectacular though. i think it needs a little more flavor. what is there is very good, sweet, kind of carmel-ish. but it just seems a tad watery for my tastes. not to say that i would not enjoy it on a warm day or with a slice of shoofly pie or something.

Deep South Chek Rootbeer

Available: AL, FL, GA, KY, LA, NC, OH, SC, TN, VA Obtained in: Winn Dixie in Louisville, KY
Head: Medium Sweetener: high fructose corn syrup
Caffeine: No

yeh, this is definitely different from the Premium. not as good either. just kind of bland, root beer. it has a slightly unusual taste, sort of a bitter thing that i don’t like much. not the worst soda ever or even bad really, just mediocre and not the best. yet at 5/$1 or whatever, i can’t expect much. i woudl suggest that if you live near a Winn-Dixie that you splurge and get the premium version of the generic soda.

ok, so i got this and Chek root beer at the Winn-Dixie store in Louisville (which also had caffeine free Mountain Dew hooray!!) which somewhat shocked me. i mean, TWO kinds of generic root beer in one store?! i did not realize they were distributed by the same company until just now in fact. strange. i guess this is supposed to be the better one, being ‘Premium’ and all. so yeh. this is decent. a little too sweet for me, but still good. a little different from the normal generic root beer, it has a bit of a kick actually. a decent soda to have with a pizza or something but not really a soda i would sit and savor.

Jackson Hole Soda Company Buckin’ Rootbeer

Available: CA, OK, WY, online Obtained in: mailorder from popsoda.com

mmm, that is good. spicy but in a really good way. anise i think is the main spice here. a pretty high level of carbonation too. nonetheless it is creamy. which is weird, that it can be at once spicy, creamy and very bubbly, they don’t seem to be things that can happen together. but i suppose they don’t, it is more of a sequence. this is not a root beer i would want to gulp down at all. i am savoring every mouthful. especially since i only got 2 bottles. but at the price it costs to ship glass bottles across the country, i think that is understandable.
