Yacht Club Root Beer

ah! this soda has been so very elusive! i always heard it was out there, the website existed, but the one time i was in Rhode Island in the past 20 years, i forgot to look for it. silly me. of course, it only seems to be available in RI. but then i got an email from the mighty Trevor offering to trade some Yacht Club sodas with me!! hooray, it was a glorious day indeed! so expect reviews of a few of the sodas from this company in the coming days.

the labels on these sodas are very impressive and pretty while still being functional and interesting i think. a very nice painting of a lighthouse on the sea is the background. the foreground has the Yacht Club soda logo and info. it evokes the ocean and both the calm, playful side of it as well as the functional yet powerful side too. they claim to be the official soda of Rhode Island but i was unable to validate that claim. they do seem to be of the old school, making soda since 1915 in a huge variety of flavors. i love companies like this, small, local and dedicate to the cause. i hope they have a loyal following.
all of this makes me want to like this drink. but i don’t so much. it is alright but not good. it is rather bitter which can be fine at times but it is a harsh bitter to me and that is not what i hope for in a root beer. perhaps it should be sweeter. i think they are going for a more herbal, natural taste but it does not execute quite so well. which is admirable really, to not stick to the expected flavor exactly, but to venture out and try to innovate. the risk being that it will not appeal to as many people. and this does not totally appeal to me.

  1. not bad, kind of herbal tasting, slight aftertaste that i’m not thrilled with. I give this a 70.

  2. I just tried this. It does have a mild bitter flavor. The flavor is slightly herbal, but basic. It tastes exactly as I expected, which was just ok. I would not get this one again as the flavor was ok. I give this a 75
