Joseph James Brewing Co Joe’s Root Beer

there is quite a tale behind the review of this one. I had traded with the mighty doctor gourmet for a bottle of this some time ago. at the time, i had a whole bunch of sodas to review. i drank this one, took photos, wrote the review. or so i thought. one day I realized none of that actually happened except the drinking of it as i had an empty bottle in my collection. what?! huh? i have no idea. i could see maybe the review not saving or something, but the photos should be there. although sometimes i put off the photo taking so perhaps that is what occurred?
so upon that realization i tried to track some down and found i could order it direct from the brewer. and at quite a great price, especially for mail order! i quickly placed the order and waited. then waited some more. after 6 weeks i emailed them, forwarding my emailed order receipt. the head brewer said to call him so i did, left a message for him. didn’t hear back. 3 weeks later i emailed again with the same info, he said to call. i did, no answer, left a message and then emailed and asked why he can’t just email me and say where my soda was. he called back and explained they were having issues with their ordering system and didn’t get notification of what i ordered so didn’t know what to send. as i had sent the receipt to them with the order info on it three (3) times, i didn’t get it, but i told him what it was i paid for and offered to send my paypal receipt or something also if he wanted to see i was not scamming him. he was very nice and kind and seemed to be a good guy with no bad intentions but i just wanted my soda. about 3 weeks later i got my case of Joe’s! hooray! so yeah, lots of activity behind getting to this point.
i recall that when i first drank this i quite liked it so it made all of the rigamarole worth it to get it again. (i don’t think i have ever seen the word “rigamarole” written, that was definitely one for the spell checker!) this bottle is good, but not quite as good as i remember. the vanilla is there, as is the honey, but it is a little less smooth than i prefer. i find that honey sweetened root beers tend to be smoother. or at least sweeter, but this one it still a bit rough. more in the carbonation aspect than in the straight up taste side. it is definitely good and a yummy soda, but i had gone into writing this expecting even better. anytheway… the basic taste is solidly ‘root beer’ but with enough twist with the honey and other notes in there to set it apart. the head is strong and lasting which is visually a nice feature. i will enjoy my case and maybe even order more if the price stays the same. i suspect it will go up as postage must be close to what the cost was.

  1. I have a friend that came over today so we could sample some new root beers. He just went to Vegas and on a work related trip and found this one. Sweet, never heard of it and here it is. I did like this one, I give this an 80, not overly sweet.
