this was a very nice surprise!! I had gone to a huge flea market type deal with my family as my brother was selling stuff and also flea markets are fun. of course the kids got hungry and cranky and there was not really much of a food selection there beyond a couple snack things and fried meat in a couple configurations. the town itself had a few restaurants in the downtown area, just off of where the market was, but they all had about an hour wait, what with the huge influx of shoppers and so on. thus we decided to just go back to our car and find something on the way home. now, since there was not much parking downtown, we had had to park a but away and take a shuttle to the market area. so we waited at the shuttle stop for the return voyage. and waited. and waited. after like 20 minutes we have up and just decided to walk back. (don’t worry I am getting to the crux of the tale.) on this journey by foot we passed a pizzeria! in we went for much needed slices. right in the entrance was a cooler filled with custom label sodas in many flavors! I knew I had had the root beer before but I got one anyway, just to check, along with this birch beer and I think something else, although I am too lazy to go down to my root beer fridge and check right now. so yeah, I very much like finding unexpected sodas as it is a quite rare occurrence these days.
I am not too impressed with this soda. I like my clear birch beers (or birch beers in general) to be wintergreen tasting, but this is not too flavorful sugar water. it has a little bit of a “earthy/rooty” taste so I would guess this is supposed to be a birch beer. if i was not reviewing it, I would not think a lot about it and just drink it and that would be fine. I am not grossed out or anything. yet I am reviewing it and in that context it is not so great. a little harsh in the bubbles as well. like I said, if it was just something to drink with a meal or something, fine, but greater scrutiny lowers the level. hopefully the other one I got is better.
