Barq’s Birch Beer

i saw a photo of this in my daily google ‘birch beer’ search email thing and was very confused and intrigued. huh? what is going on here? Barq’s wasn’t really supposed to even be root beer, why would they make a birch beer? but it is the root beer of Coca Cola that they control pretty fully so i suppose they ran out of cola flavor ideas and realized you could do the same for root beers. yes, it is debatable that birch beer is a root beer variant but it’s the premise i’ve been going on for a couple decades here so i continue with it. although i am all for them making more Barq’s flavors. cherry Barq’s, ginger Barq’s, etc. anyway… upon further investigation i found that this was a regional release, only in the northeast of the US, which is mostly where birch beer exists in the US anyhow. and this soda is mostly to be found WaWa stores. which is convenient for me on the day i found it out as there is one across the street from where i was! i soon walked over there and found it proudly displayed (well, sort of, it was in the door fridge thing with a little sign). i bought a few for friends and moved on.
they went for a super dark red birch beer here. i am not a fan of artificial colors so i am a bit let down there, but i don’t expect much else from Coca Cola really. along those lines this is ok. it is definitely a birch beer, with a bit of that telltale wintergreen taste on the back end. the first taste is more sharp and formless but that settles into a sweet flavor and the wintergreen rises up from there to leave you with a nice memory. it is a bit overcarbonated for me and i wish the mouthfeel wasn’t so harsh to start yet it is a mass produced thing, so i can’t expect too much perhaps. for what it is, it is not bad. it is better than Barq’s root beer, that is for sure. i’m pretty stoked that they made this at all.

Ingredients: water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, artificial flavors, acacia, sodium benzoate (to protect taste), phosphoric acid, potassium sorbate (to protect taste), red 40
