shortly after i got the Cicero Salted Caramel Root Beer in the mail, i was discussing it with another root beer reviewer. yes, we talk! he asked if i had had the Cicero regular root beer. then a very kind and friendly beverage industry guy emailed me asking the same thing. i said to both that i had no idea there was one. so i emailed the company asking if i could mail order some of it. they offered to send some over, as well as a bottle of their lime soda, so they heard i liked lime soda too. i suspect Eric is to blame for that. =) granted i do enjoy lime soda, so that is all good by me.
i am not sure what makes a root beer “chicago style” though. thick crust? i suppose i will soon find out.
the graphics on here are very similar to that of the Salted Caramel Root Beer but instead of a brown liquid falling from the sky into the river, it is just a brown river, presumably made of root beer. sounds fun at first but probably pretty icky in reality. i imagine lots of bugs and sticky swimmers. any the who… i like the label fine, kind of an old “wanted poster” style with fake burnt edges and the like.
now the soda itself… although i got it for free, i must admit i don’t love it. it has a very sharp initial mouth feel with a large head. the sharp carbonation dominates the flavor too, making my mouth tingly well after the soda is gone down my gullet. i can tell it is root beer otherwise but just barely. it just doesn’t have a lot of taste. it is sweet and slightly herbal in there but on the whole watery. sure, i prefer it to A&W or the like, but it does not live up to the Capone’s Family Secret or Cicero Salted Caramel, unfortunately.

Maybe the sharp mouth feel and not a lot of taste IS Chicago Style 😛
this was my least favorite of the three. I liked the salted caramel better. I gave this a 60
