holy crap, 240 calories?! 50 grams of carbs?! 135mg of sodium? that is all insane. well, the carbs/sugar is not too terrible, a lot pf root beers are in that range, but that’s a lot of calories and sodium. i do like salty caramel though so hopefully they pull it off.
it seems to be the trend these days to do a butterscotch root beer, ever since Dang! first did it six or seven years ago. it is a fine flavor combo and i am all for flavor variations so keep doing it soda companies! I did not expect AJ Stephens to be the next to branch out in such a fashion as they seem to be a pretty traditional, established brand, but kudos to them for doing new things.
so this is a very sweet soda! all of the butterscotch root beers are really, so that is not shocking in itself. it is not sickeningly sweet though unlike a couple of those. the root beer flavor is also more present, it does not come off as just a butterscotch soda, there is more there. it is not a drink i would reach for too often, i don’t want something THIS sweet very much, but as an occasional thing, i am all for it. it is rich and smooth and creamy, the carbonation doesn’t impinge on the flavor profile. well done AJ!

Anthony, have you tried the Sprecher 12oz root beer. Sweetened with honey only.
I was not impressed. Flat, somewhat strange taste. What do you think?
I thought this one had a pretty good flavor….right under Dangs! version though. The main problem I had with this was also how sweet it was. I thought the flavor was smooth, candy-like, and pretty good. However, the candy-like flavor did make it seem somewhat dessert-like….and I kind of liked that but also kind of didn’t. All in all, I think this was a solid root beer. I just wish they made it less sweet. It’s weird because the label states 40 grams of sugar, but it tastes like 50 grams worth of sugar – and even the label says 50g of carbs, and carbs usually coincide with sugar….so it leaves me skeptical as to whether this soda really does have just 40 grams of sugar in it. This was good, and I would get it again….just maybe next time I’d drink it as a dessert; rather than with a meal. 83 out of 100 for me.
