Virgil’s Zero Sugar Root Beer

I have never been a big fan of Virgil’s. when I first started this site and mentioned it to someone, more often than not people asked what I thought of Virgil’s. it was ok, but very hyped and I don’t think it ever really lived up to that. now for some reason Virgil’s decided to reformulate all of their drinks. probably something to do with being acquired and maybe keeping costs down or something? who knows? not me, I don’t know math! I do know though that the old version of their diet soda was not good. perhaps this will be though! they also redesigned all the packaging, some of it is better, some of it much worse. this package is decent, I like it better than the old version. but the fact that they switched over to using cans instead of glass bottles for this is something of a strike against. I mean, diet sodas almost always taste metallic to begin with, why tempt fate and put them in a metal can which is going to make them taste even more metallic?
well…. this is not as bad as it used to be! it still tastes “diet” and like licking metal poles but it also tastes pretty licorice-ish, so that is something. i don’t think I would guess this is a root beer if it was a blind taste test though. overall it pretty bad. after my first sip, my stomach hurt. if you like stomach aches and maybe need to move your bowels, give this a try! i appreciate them using natural sweeteners, yet it is still not good and the aftertaste is just terrible.

I found this one oddly flat. Available in bottles at my Trader Joes (in California, Bay Area) so that was a plus, not terrible, but needed more fizz. Not very rooty, but not bad and the fake sweetner is way better than your average Diet soda, but not perfect.
