review #900! (edit: ok, actually it is 909, a few sodas in the database had no review date so my count was off! oh well.) and it is coincidentally a soda I have been wanting to get for many years. or perhaps it is a root beer with the same name as one I wanted to get a long time ago? I tend to think this is the same one and maybe it just disappeared for a while since the old one also had hot air balloons on the label and that is a rather unique thing. as the Napa Valley Soda Company used to make a different root beer I suspect really they made “Rutherford Root Beer” first, then dropped that designation without reformulating it before actually making a new recipe and giving it the old name. but really I have no basis for any of that hypothesis and I just thought it up as I typed but hey, it could be true! plus they have moved operations from Rochester, NY to Calistoga, CA in the meantime. that makes more sense really.
so it has been fifteen years since I had the other Napa Valley Soda Co offering so really I have no idea what it tasted like. so I kind of have a clean slate here. I will go read it again after I do this review though to see. sadly this bottle is rather flat though so that is no fun. it happens though, so whatever. beyond that it is a little bit unique of a soda. it is not too sweet and kind of herbal, more than your usual root beer. it also has a kind of fruity taste which is tricky to pull off. unfortunately they don’t fully succeed in that as it tastes kind of weird. I’m not saying it is awful, it it drinkable and actually alright but not super yummy or anything.
looking at their website (well, not actually theirs as someone else owns it now apparently), I would assume they are no longer in business anyway, which I believe Sagi mentioned to me when he sent me this lovely bottle. but perhaps you can find some dead stock as well and be knowledgeable about it.
