My good friend Craig is always on the lookout for new sodas for me. as he is in the Boston area, he has had some luck with it. he emailed me one day and said he had gotten me a couple of Squamscot sodas and asked if i had had them. as i had not had the birch i was excited. i did not see him for a couple months after that so in the meantime i placed an order for some sodas and forgot he had gotten it for me so i ordered one of these. then i did see him before i reviewed it and got a 2nd bottle. which in this case is a very good thing. you see, this one is very flat and probably got messed up in shipping. it just tastes ‘off.’ and i don’t mean the band. or the bed repellant spray. even with that i did finish the bottle.
it is not awful really. the flavor is a reasonably standard brown birch taste. a little bit wintergreen which is nice for me, i like that taste. it is a bit syrupy sweet but that may be a function of the flatness more than anything else. i enjoy it and it would be even better with some bubbles.
so now i will try the other bottle and see how it should be, hopefully. if it too is flat, then i deem it a feature of the soda and not my bad luck. ok, yeah, pretty much exactly the same. this has a lot of potential. the flavor is actually quite good but the complete lack of carbonation takes it down a lot. i don’t usually think about the carbonation affecting the taste so much, but it definitely is noticeable when it is completely absent. alas.
