Hank’s is a Pennsylvania company. birch beer is a drink made in not a lot of places. it’s a good thing that Pennsylvania is one of those places. otherwise this review would never have happened. kindly the company sent me some of this new reformulated version when they used cane sugar.
as far as birch beer goes, this is solid. the standard wintergreen taste of birch beer is strong here. plus it is hearty. nice and sweet yet a bit creamy. they walk that balance perfectly. that is what I like about a good red birch. it balances the strong wintergreen of a white birch and the smooth, hearty flavor of a brown birch. it seems there is no real reason why this traditional hierarchy is not violated on occasion but I am good with it. I thought this was a brown birch honestly at first, before I looked at the ingredients and saw the red #40 in here. since it is in a brown bottle, you would have no idea it is red I was surprised it was so much wintergreen. I thought they were breaking the rules! but they were not. which is fine as they did it well. they for sure make one of the better red birch beers out there and I am very glad it is available near me.
