Manhattan Special Sarsaparilla

it has been a very long time since I had their soda at all I will admit. it is one of those brands that was often in stores and I don’t really notice when it is gone. at least it used to always be in the supermarket I went to before I moved a couple years ago. usually they would have the espresso soda, which is rather tasty as well, but occasionally they would have the sarsaparilla as well, but in the huge 28 oz bottles. when the company seemed to switch to the 12 oz bottles I did not see the sarsaparilla anymore. but when i visited Rocket Fizz a few weeks ago, I checked every bottle of root beer related beverages they had for recipe changes. lo and behold, this one had changed! the label was different as well, I like what they did with it, it is rather high class I suppose I would say.
I first reviewed their old recipe in 1997 I believe. so it has been a while indeed. I do not recall it being all that good, hence me not getting it much after that time. so I am hopefully that is this is better. oh. yeah. it definitely is better! nice work Manhattan Special people! phew. it has that extra rooty taste I would expect/hope for from a sarsaparilla, that sort of natural, slightly bitter undercurrent. it is rather sweet though so the contrast is nice. the carbonation is not too strong either, which is good in that it does not take away from the taste but not as good since I enjoy a bit more carbonation than this. so this soda is sort of a study in contrasts I guess. sweet yet bitter, carbonated but not quite enough.
