you know I really thought there was a Henry Weinhard’s recipe between the very old one I had reviewed when I first started this thing up and now. but I see no trace really of it in my database or reviews so apparently I just made that all up.
although I have much older sodas to review in my fridge, I had to review this one, sort of spur of the moment. you see I had to move my root beer fridge as I keep it near my water heater and boiler and I woke up to no heat in my hose a day or so ago. thus the plumbers needed to get a look and I had to move my fridge. unfortunately this one got jostled and knocked over so when I opened it up to be sure nothing got jostled and knocked over, this one was was leaking a bit. so out it came and off to review.
Henry Weinhard’s has somewhat of a special place in my heart, it seems to be one of the most successful and longest continuously lasting of the microbrew sodas that existed and which I found when I first realized the extent of this semi-underground world. coming from the east coast myself, when I went west for a trip, to see the prevalence of Henry Weinhard’s, a brand I did not even know existed was surprising. I knew there were some regional sodas and makers and such, but this one was in a lot of places. and it was quite tasty to boot! now they have changed it, made it with cane sugar, took away the vanilla, honey and sarsaparilla at least as from being expressly listed ingredients.
I like this I must say. I think I like it more than the old recipe even. it goes down very smoothly. it is nicely carbonated but it does not interfere with the flavor. there is still a nice honey taste underneath which I appreciate. the main flavor is a pretty typical root beer but enhanced a bit and taken up a few notches. without taking any chances, this is probably one of the best straight up root beers.
usually when there is a new recipe it does not work out the best, but this time it did. excellent work Henry.

Henry Weinhard’s used to be arguably the best root beer in the country…2nd to only 1919 in my opinion. Since they moved to cane sugar it’s been awful. Tastes like all the rest now, no distinctiveness whatsoever. Hollow, empty, no body or creamy vanilla/honey aftertaste…Pure garbage now. Incredibly disappointing and a complete 180 by the company. I’ll never buy it again.
