this soda was a long time coming. you see I live in the great state of NJ but in within their delivery area when they first came out in 2023 I believe and the closest place they seemed to sell it was a couple hour drive away. as my uncle lives at the shore I figured I could get some delivered there at some point when I was down there. but I just never really planned my visits well enough in advance to get delivery and didn’t want to burden him with having to deal with it, so I waited. and I checked back in on their website occasionally. eventually I noticed the delivery area had expanded to include where I actually live. granted delivery was kind of pricey but when it came I saw that it probably came via some doordash type delivery service, which is sort of weird, but whatever. I mean, I did doordash for a bit and I wouldn’t have taken a delivery that was two hours each way unless I was making way more even than what I paid for delivery. or maybe they just have workers who live or do a delivery run up in this area. I did not actually see the person but the bag on my doorstep so I am a bit mystified and only conjecturing here anyway.
still I am not quite sure this is their own unique recipe. it just seems like it must be a custom label operation. when I asked them they told me they were their own sodas yet it seems a little wacky to come out with like 20 flavors of soda at once, out of no where. I will take their word for it and press on.
the label here is fun and whimsical. it depicts seagulls at various past and one future date stealing french fries from people who on the whole are seemingly happy about it. now, as someone who has had french fries stolen from me on the boardwalks of New Jersey, it is not a fun experience at all. they are kind of violent and really jerks who come basically out of no where and yell at you as their sharp beaks grab as much of your greatly overpriced food as possible. now this is much worse in Atlantic City and Ocean City, from my experiences. that is mostly the area they have pictured anyway.
it seems “sarsaparilla” means something different to some people. it my mind, which I have pointed out before, I think sarsaparilla should be pretty similar to a root beer but ‘heavier’ and ‘heartier’ if that makes sense. but abotu 1/4 of the time it seems to be taken to mean something more herbal and kind of light. I am not opposed to that taste in general but it is not what I expect. this, as you probably guessed, takes that second approach. it is good, for sure. nice and light, smooth and sort of tea-like but with a decent creaminess to it as well. it is a drink I could easily just down in a very short time but it definitely is better to take it slow and savor it a bit as it does not a somewhat complex flavor that develops and metamorphoses as you consume it. nice work Jersey Shore, or who ever actually made this. it does really remind me of another sarsaparilla so I will have to search my database to see if it does match up.
