Forty Ninth State Brewing Frontier Spruce Tip

this one I am excited for! it comes from the marvelous gourmet since he is a very kind soul and he does not mess with canned sodas, or non-labeled root beers. I am calling this a spruce beer although they call it a ‘spruce tip soda.’ seems the same thing to me. and yeah I get that spruce tips are not really roots so this probably qualifies less as a ‘root’ beer than even ginger sodas made from ginger roots. but it is made from trees, that is enough for me, and it is my website so I make the rules here.
the few other spruce beers I have had have walked that line between refreshing / crisp and gross / pinesol tasting. this one is also in that camp. I can definitely see people not liking this, but I mostly do. it wavers for me. mostly I am liking it. it seems more fruity than I expect. the taste is also pine-ish. it reminds me actually of a mountain dew knock off which I did not expect. maybe a mountain dew / ginger beer mash up? yeah that is a good description of the flavor here. those are two things I enjoy so this is growing more on me as time goes on.
