I have had this in my root beer fridge for quite a while, somehow it was pushed to the back after I passed over it a few times when selecting what I shall review. the main reason is the caffeine, which means I have to drink it early in the day. as it is 10:40 am this seems as good a time as any. I do actually have three or so root beer energy drinks in the fridge as well which I will have to try to get too soon. my relationship to caffeine and coffee as well are sort of strange I must admit. I only have caffeinated drinks occasionally or for sports performance. and I cannot even recall the last time I had a cup of coffee. I have coffee ice cream occasionally. actually I make decaf coffee ice cream in my ninja creami fairly often, but actually caffinated coffee ice cream is a rarity even though it is one of my favorite flavors. it just affects me too much so I can’t have it after like 3 pm or I won’t sleep. a couple weeks ago I was at a party, talking to an older gentleman who proudly talked of how he had three large mugs of coffee each day, one first thing in the morning, at like 5 am, another at like 9 am when everyone else got up, then one more at like 8 pm and he slept very well. great for him of course, but I cant do that. anyway, here is an espresso root beer. I think it really is Northwoods Espresso Root Beer but I will go on the assumption it is not as they said it was their own recipe when I asked them.
I rather enjoy this, it definitely has more an espresso flavor than root beer, but that is in there too. it is an interesting and unusual combination, well besides the other espresso root beer I mentioned above. but among the thousands of root beers out there, two or three that are similar is not so much. it has the bitterness of espresso, a sort of chocolatey richness that is on top of a sort of sweet rooty taste which builds more with time and in the aftertaste. maybe since this is old, I don’t think this is quite as good as the Northwoods version, yet it still is a very good drink.
