Berghoff Rootbeer – old recipe

yet another brand that i had heard a lot about and was told it was very good and junk. i was not terribly impressed though i must say. not that it is a bad drink, it is just rather regular and generic. i’d drink it before i’d have A&W or any major brand really but not before a lot of the really superior and unique micro brews. that they have 32’s is a major plus for them as far as i am concerned

  1. I rated this at 30, I thought it was like water, very little flavor and very light in color. Rick b

The initial smell was good, but the flavor was week to taste. The only ‘bite’ was from the carbonation, which was low.

I could not see if you bottle has the words “Draft Style” at the bottom of the label. On this bottle the ingredients also include: yucca extract, gum arabic, ethyl alcohol, propylene glycol alganate and triethyl citrate. Found in FL.

This root beer was just OK. I drank it, but wouldn’t buy it again.

  6. This root beer was pretty good the first time I tried it. The second time, just ok. I’m going to have to try it one last time in order to give it a score

Probably not going to buy this one again. Decent flavor, but very watery. Got sick of it by the end of the bottle.

  8. Just tried it again. Yup it’s alright, much better than Thomas Kemper. Yet, this one has a very, very slight bitter tinge on the back end. Other than that the initial taste is pretty delicious. Very “vanilaish”. Probably a little too sweet as well. Other than that this is one that I would probably buy again. A little better than your typical bottled A&W crap, but it’s not anywhere near Captain Eli’s. Or for comparison to another draft style root beer – Foxon Park draft style root beer is much better than this one…. in fact Foxon Park is probably the best draft style root beer that you can get in a bottle…. other than of course draft/cane sugar A&W from the restaurant which is heavenly. All in all, Berghoff is about a good 79. It’s worth trying at least a couple of times.

I had read the reviews and it looks like this root beer gets mixed review, but I would disagree with the more common consensus. I think this is pretty decent root beer. Now color is ok a medium brown, the head although is on the weak side it quickly dissipates. Taste… it does have a good smooth true root beer flavor and is enjoyable. As for After Taste its sweet with a nice mellow root beer flavor. My grade scale: I give it a B+ to A-. Anthony scale I would grade about 79-86. If it’s a root beer you haven’t had yet I would recommend giving it a try.
