birch beers

Izze Sparkling Birch

wow, i have been trying and trying to get this one. supposedly it was sold at Whole Foods so i went to three different ones at different times but they never had it. then i talked to a soda insider who told me it is probably discontinued so to get it now if i wanted it. so i broke down and mail ordered it. oh well. it is still on the Izze website though so perhaps he was wrong or maybe it will soon disappear from there too.
it is not really a “brown” birch beer, more of a yellow-ish. well, it is apple juice colored exactly, which makes sense as it is colored by apple extract. that is an interesting choice i would say. anyway i did not feel like adding a new category for yellow-ish birch beers so i lumped it with the brown ones.
i can see why this may have been discontinued now that i taste it. it bears no resemblance to any birch beer i have ever had. i suppose it may not even want to be a birch beer, it is a birch sparkling beverage which sounds very la-ti-da to me, hoity-toity if you will. the apple is actually more of a taste here than the birch. it is sort of bitter. actually if i think of this like sparkling cider, which i quite like, it is not half bad. it does taste a lot like that but with smaller bubbles. hhhmmmm, i guess that is ok. it just isn’t birch-y at all. my pre-conceived notions of what this should taste like are getting in the way a bit. alright, i will say this is decent. not great. i would not buy it again, as a birch beer or as a sparkling cider
