i acquired this in my trade with the all mighty Dr Eric. word is that Dang! also bottles this for them, but it is a different recipe than their own butterscotch root. as it has been about 4 years since i tried that one, i am not quite sure i recall it enough to say myself.
I have never been to a Dougie Dog location, there seems to only be one, in Vancouver. apparently they are a hot dog restaurant that delivers. supposedly though, they have Canada’s largest selection of root beer. i can get behind that fully for sure. from the picture on the website, it is indeed a pretty solid inventory. i cannot tell if they have any veggie dogs or if the yam fries are veggie or not so i don’t know if i could even eat any food there. i would assume so, doesn’t take too much effort to have a vegetarian option and they seem to be a company that aims to please.
the label is well done here, but seems very undecided on a theme. the background is a kind of weathered, old paper/parchment look. that matches the “Root Beer” font which sports bullet holes. there are griffins, the mythical half lion, half eagle creature, sporting some wicked sunglasses on each side though. and then the Dougie Dog logo is very surfer-esque with a surfboard and neon style font. i suppose the sunglasses go with the surfing thing, so it really comes down to two themes mixing it up and coming to a peaceful resolution, much like in the video for Weird Al’s ‘Eat It’ where the fat guys just get too tired and don’t fight. or something. i have not seen that video in 20 years so i may just be making that up.
i do very much enjoy butterscotch as a concept. and in practice too, on my ice cream or frozen custard. or even as a flavor for my puddin’. in fact it is one of my favorite puddin’ flavors! but in root beer? i am still a bit skeptical, just as i was when i reviewed the Dang! butterscotch take on the classic root beer. this one is also just too sweet. for anyone who knows me at all, that is really saying a lot. one of my friends tells me i am part hummingbird since i eat so much sweet stuff and like the sweet stuff so much. i am not sure i agree with that, although my mother is quite the energetic lady and pretty small, she lacks the requisite wings and super pointy beak! it also just does not taste a lot like root beer. it is there faintly but overwhelmingly it is butterscotch. i do give this a slightly higher rating than the Dang! one because i think it is decent and i can make it through the whole thing, but i don’t love it either.
