somehow I have overlooked this soda in my fridge for the past couple months, which is very much a shame since as you all know very well by now I very much enjoy birch beers, some may say even more than root beer! crazy stuff I know! this comes to me from the kind Gene which was super awesome especially since I did not know it existed. I have never been to State College, PA but would like to get there one day mainly since it seems to have a few soda brewers but also it is a wacky name for a place. I mean, it had to be called something before the state college was founded, right? of course I could investigate this myself but I prefer to remain in ignorance I suppose. I do enjoy the label of here although it sort of leads me to believe it is a red birch with the red bubbles on it. a bit sadly though, it is actually a brown birch beer. there is nothing wrong with that of course.
this being a brown birch beer, I am a bit surprised it has no color in it. I am guessing that is an oversight but that would be weird. it does have ethyl alcohol which I do not think I have ever seen in a soda before. brown birch beers are generally the most root beer-like of the varieties of birch beer and this one falls in that generalization quite well. it does have a dash of wintergreen but not a lot and not as much as I would prefer. outside of that it could be a root beer, kind of mellow and sweet but rooty with some other herbal tinges. it is not a very complex flavor and it is good. I would say it is one of the better brown birch beers I have had, it might even be the poster child for such.
huh, I just realized this is a totally different Otto’s than the root beer I have had as that one is in California and this is Pennsylvania. I think I actually have a bottle of the root beer from this place as well someplace as well! nice!
