this is the second flavor that was available at the Pirate Pete’s soda truck on the day I encountered it. whenever I hear the word “buccaneer” I think of the pirate joke that goes like “what did the pirate farmer price his corn at?” “buck an ear!” and it makes me smile because bad puns are always fun and pirate jokes are also always fun so together they are awesome.
this one is a red birch beer, which is usually my second favorite type but sometimes combines the best of the world of the white birch beer with the best of the world of the brown birch beer for an even better hybrid galaxy. this one here does just that! it has a wonderfully strong wintergreen taste on top of some nice herbal tones. the sweetness is just right, quite high but not over the edge into sickly. they got the carbonation right as well, which I imagine might vary day to day but also they are professionals so perhaps not and they just have it dialed in every time. I would guess they use cane sugar here but who really knows, there could be some other sweetener, sugar beets or something in use in this beverage. I went back for almost three mugs of this. although with the nice head it had and not wanting to hold up others that really was like half a mug each time once the foam calmed down.
