Bobby Boy’s Barrel Root Beer

one of my favorite things in the world is to get an email from a company/place/person i have never heard of offering to send me some of their soda for review. following closely behind this is to get review soda from a company i do know about. and this is all way behind my kids laughing or my wife’s smile.
so like i said, i know nothing about this place. apparently it is a retro custard/burger joint. i am all for those. especially if they have rockin fries, perhaps pizza fries or maybe sweet potato pizza fries. has anyone done that? let me know how it is, i suspect the answer to be “the awesome!” and frozen custard is an incredible thing. it is highly overlooked in the grand scheme of frozen dairy desert treats. i feel like people consider it to be below ice cream and way below gelato on the scale of yumminess. those people are wrong! very wrong. don’t believe the hype, eat custard and enjoy. yeah. i love that this place has a new custard flavor every day too! wow! i would be even more excited if they had like 40 flavors all the time and just highlighted one or put one on sale each day or something though. but of course space is limited i am sure and that would be much more work. any the who….
i have a feeling that they don’t make this soda themselves, but i may be wrong. usually places like this will just get vanity labels on soda made by someone else. in any case though, they have a very solid product here. it is smooth and creamy, you can definitely taste the vanilla strongly. it is a bit under the limit of where it would become too much and remains strongly in the overall mix, not overtaking the root beer-ness of it. i don’t think they take any other real risks with the taste but they don’t need to as this just works and reaches a very high level as it is. the carbonation level is a little too low, i get almost no foam or head although those are unconnected to the carbonation level anyhow i am told. i would like a touch more bubbles myself. it is quite sweet which may turn some people off and may be overwhelming in a float or the like but, for me, it is just right. so if you are ever in or near Petoskey, MI, stop in and let me know how the custard is.

Anthony, if you ever get to the City, make sure to visit the Shake Shack. They have a different custard flavor every day (BTW, the house root beer is Abita).

I’m from Petoskey and have happily had the Bobin’s root beer on many occasion but Bobby Boy is a fine independent root beer that I’ve had on many other occasions. It has a strong, quick-hitting flavor that I quite enjoy–though not so much served from the fountain with ice in it.
